The amount of damage a woodpecker can do to your home is quite amazing… unless of course, you are the one paying to repair it. A woodpecker doesn’t usually just start poking holes in your home for no reason though, so you might be able to take care of the problem by treating the underlying issue first.
While it does happen that a woodpecker will use its pecking to attract a mate, the most common reason for it is finding food. Woodpeckers will eat bugs that are living inside of the wood, and they use their excellent sight and hearing to track these down.
The solution for a homeowner is fairly obvious, get rid of the bugs that they are looking for, and you will get rid of the woodpeckers, but unfortunately, this can be easier said than done. It might be necessary for you to consult a professional pest control company that can take care of the problem.
Since woodpeckers are protected by law, it does limit your options, but you might be able to keep them away from your property with netting or some type of deterrent, but usually scarecrows and such don’t work very well since the birds will get used to them.
