When building an addition to a home, often there will be a need to get the proper building permits. Naturally, not everyone takes this as seriously as they should, and this means that there might be things in a home you are considering that were built without being approved and inspected.
Why should that matter for you? There really are 2 main reasons why you should be concerned about this. First, when you buy a home, you now take responsibility for these additions, which could prove to be a problem in the future, especially if you seek to have a building permit and it turns out that there are previous additions that never got a permit.
There is also the possible issue of the safety of the addition. If something is built without a permit, it might have been put together by a shady contractor or even a DIY homeowner. If there are serious issues hiding in your home, they are very likely going to be found in that addition.
